Abstract

ABSTRACT

Juvenile inmates who are in prison or coaching institutions do not have a place to express their emotions or feelings, cannot explore, channel their hobbies, and share their feelings while being inmates, so they tend to hide their emotions. Expressive writing is expected to be a place for juvenile prisoners to express their emotions. This study aims to determine the effect of expressive writing in improving emotional abilities in adolescents. This study used the one-group pretest-posttest design experimental research design. The participants in this study were 5 male juvenile inmates aged 19-21 years with maladaptive emotion regulation. The measuring instrument used in this study is the Difficulties of Emotion Regulation Scale 18 (DERS-18) which has been adapted into Indonesian, where the lower the DERS-18 score, the better emotion regulation. The data analysis technique used the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that expressive writing had an effect on improving the emotional regulation ability of adolescents in LPKA Class II Maros (ρ=0.0215) with a mean pretest value of 53.60 and a mean posttest of 38.40.? The implication of this research is that expressive writing can be used as a forum to improve the emotional regulation ability of juvenile prisoners.
