Abstract

ABSTRACT

Recently, ta'aruf is one of the practices for Indonesian Moslems to find a life partner. Choosing the right life partner is necessary because personality characteristics are a determining factor in marital satisfaction. This study aims to determine how much the influence of big five personality traits on marital satisfaction in ta'aruf couples. This research approach is a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional research design. Respondents in this study were married couples, aged 20-59 years, who have been married for at least one year and underwent ta'aruf for a maximum of three months, which were obtained using an accidental sampling technique. The instruments used in this study are the Skala Kepuasan Pernikahan Pasangan Urban with 38 items (reliability = 0.77) and NEO-FFI-3 with 61 items (reliability = 0.95 – 0.97) which analyzed by simple linear regression technique. The results showed that there was an effect of extraversion (35.4%), openness to experience (31%), conscientiousness (19.4%), and agreeableness (13.7%) on marital satisfaction (p<0.05). However, neuroticism (2.5%) was found to have no effect (p>0.05) on marital satisfaction. The results of the ANOVA test show that there is a difference in average marital satisfaction at the level of income per month owned by the respondents. The results of this study focus on the importance of cultivating personality characteristics that can increase marital satisfaction in ta'aruf couples, both before marriage and after marriage
